I’ve been a fan of Maverick thermometers for years. Their handheld instant-read PT-100 ProTemp is great for quick checks, and the ET-732 has been my go-to for longer cooks at home and at the farmer’s market. Maverick products are solidly built—many come in a rubberized housing that takes the knocks of real-world grilling without falling apart.

A few weeks ago Maverick sent me the new XR50 Wireless BBQ & Meat Thermometer to test. It quickly became our “house” thermometer. Think of the ET-732 multiplied and improved: four probe inputs, independent high/low set points with alarms, and a long wireless range so you can monitor cooks from across the house without relying on a phone app.

Key features and specs include:

  • Insta-Sync technology for fast pairing
  • Monitor up to four probes simultaneously
  • Clear LED display with a temperature graph
  • Four durable, waterproof stainless-steel probes
  • Designed for grilling, smoking, oven use and more
  • Temperature range from 32°F to 572°F
  • Probe wires rated to 716°F for high-heat work

On first handling the XR50, the build quality stood out. The unit is neat and practical, with both rear magnets and a fold-out stand so you can place it where it’s most convenient. Setting alarms and presets is straightforward: you can program each probe with its own high/low limits or choose from built-in presets. Each probe also has an independent timer and alarm—useful when juggling different cuts and grill zones.

I prefer not to manage grills from a phone, and the XR50 suits that approach. It’s easy to use: plug in your probes, set target temperatures if you like, and go. For testing, I used multiple probes on different cuts to compare readings: probes in a pork shoulder and ham, a few probes across tri-tips to check thin and thick areas, plus one for grill temperature. The unit handled all of that without fuss.

My favorite test was a reverse sear on a 3-pound tomahawk steak. I set the desired temps, left the steak to come up gradually, then finished with a hot sear while monitoring progress. The XR50’s alarms and clear readout let me enjoy dinner without constantly hovering over the grill.

Overall the XR50 was easy to use and delivered accurate, consistent temperature readings throughout a variety of cooks. The combination of four probes, programmable alerts, and a long wireless range makes it a valuable tool for backyard chefs who want reliable monitoring without being tethered to an app.
