Everything you’ve heard is true. Milford Sound is breathtaking.
We originally planned a day trip from Queenstown that included a cruise of the Sound, but we changed our plans so we could fully enjoy the area and stayed two nights. Day trips can be long and tiring — often 12 to 13 hours round trip with an early start, a coach ride to the terminal, a cruise, and a long drive back. That works if time is tight, but if you dislike very early mornings and want to be fully present while cruising one of the South Island’s most spectacular sights, staying overnight is far more relaxing.
Many people say Milford Sound is best seen in the rain, when dozens more waterfalls appear and the scenery gains extra drama. While that can be true, it’s hard to imagine it becoming more impressive than on the sunny day we visited. As someone from one of Britain’s rainier regions, I was happy to trade a few additional falls for sunshine on deck.
We took a Jucy Cruize, a just-under-two-hour trip. The budget traveler in me appreciated the complimentary tea and coffee on board, but we spent most of our time outside. With such stunning views, staying inside for a caffeine fix would be a missed opportunity.
The standout moment for me was sailing close to rocks where sea lions lay sunning themselves and barking. One slipped into the water and paddled around, almost performing for the crowd so the scenery didn’t steal the show entirely. It was a delightful, natural highlight.
Before visiting New Zealand I read that Milford Sound is the most crowded and touristy of the Sounds, which might diminish the experience. In our case that wasn’t true. Only a limited number of vessels depart each day, with sailings staggered so boats don’t crowd one another. This scheduling also prevents overlapping loud commentary from competing vessels, which can spoil other attractions.
Our boat didn’t use a scripted narration; the captain pointed out points of interest and kept the commentary relaxed, informative, and enjoyable. As with any trip, much of the experience depends on your perspective, and we made sure ours was memorable.
