Lucky Charms Rice Krispies Treats

I make Rice Krispies-style treats a lot at home—my chocolate Rice Krispies treats and classic gooey microwave version are family favorites. Swapping Rice Krispies cereal for Lucky Charms adds a festive rainbow of marshmallows and a sweeter, chewier texture. These bars are slightly denser than the traditional version but just as addictive. If you want Leprechaun-approved treats for St. Patrick’s Day, these are a must-try.

Avoid a Sticky Mess!

Making marshmallow cereal treats can get sticky quickly. To keep clean, coat a wooden spoon or rubber spatula with a little oil or nonstick spray before stirring and pressing the mixture. Use the same oiled utensil to flatten the mixture in the pan. When adding the extra marshmallows on top, lightly spray your hands or use food-safe gloves so the marshmallows don’t cling to you.

Equipment

  • 9×13 Baking Pan
Serves
12 treats

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup salted butter (1½ sticks)
  • 6 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional)
  • 6 cups Lucky Charms cereal
  • 1 cup Lucky Charms marshmallows (extra for topping)

Instructions

  • Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter.
  • Add the mini marshmallows and vanilla. Stir until fully melted and smooth.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and fold in the Lucky Charms cereal using an oiled wooden spoon or rubber spatula until the cereal is evenly coated.
  • Press the mixture firmly and evenly into the prepared pan.
  • Sprinkle the extra Lucky Charms marshmallows on top and press down gently so they adhere without crushing the cereal.
  • Let the bars cool and set for about 30 minutes. Use the parchment overhang to lift them from the pan, slice into squares, and serve.

Notes

You can remove the marshmallows from the cereal entirely and use only cereal in the mix, then add marshmallows on top. Bags of marshmallows-only are often available if you want extra marshmallows for the topping.

Tips:

  • Line the pan with parchment for easy removal and cleanup.
  • When adding the marshmallow pieces on top, press lightly so the cereal doesn’t get crushed.
  • Coat your hands and utensils with a little oil to prevent sticking while pressing the mixture into the pan.

Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 6 weeks. Wrap individual bars or separate layers with parchment when freezing.

  • Try Chocolate Lucky Charms or other special cereal varieties for a fun twist.
  • Melt white chocolate chips and drizzle or dip the finished bars for a sweet finishing touch, or pour a thin layer of chocolate into the pan before pressing in the cereal mixture.
