Last summer I nervously walked into my boss’s office and told him I was quitting. I wasn’t leaving for another company — I was leaving to stay home with my children and focus on my blog full-time. (Scroll down for a step-by-step guide to start your own.)
It sounded kind of crazy.
Any big leap feels uncertain. Much of me thought it might be a terrible decision, but after carefully weighing the options I decided to take the chance. I committed to giving this new path a fair shot.
Since then, I’ve increased my blog income by 425% and now earn double — sometimes more — than I did at my office job. I set my own schedule, choose where I work, and usually work far less than a typical 40-hour week. A typical day for me looks something like this:

You’ve probably heard stories like this from other bloggers. If you’ve wondered whether you could do the same, I want to tell you that you can. It’s not easy and it’s not fast, but earning your own income from home and having the flexibility to take an afternoon off for your kids is absolutely worth it.
It is more than worth it.
If you want to start a blog, I’ll walk you through the process. I’ve broken everything down in detail so you can begin. To create your blog in just a few minutes, follow the simple steps below.
How blogs make money
There are three common ways bloggers earn income:
- Ads — Display advertisements on your site that companies pay to place.
- Sponsored posts — Writing posts on behalf of a company or product.
- Affiliates — Recommending products and earning a commission when readers buy through your links.

If you want to make money from home without a blog, there are plenty of side-income ideas that don’t require an overwhelming time investment. Earning extra income can be done in many practical ways.
I know many parents want to stay home with their kids — I felt the same for years. This blog made it possible for me, and I want to help you do the same.

STEP ONE: Name Your Blog
Your blog name is your domain. Choose a name that reflects your blog’s focus and is easy to spell and remember. You want visitors to understand what your site is about from the name alone.
If you haven’t settled on a name yet, brainstorm variations and try different combinations until you find one that’s available and feels right.
STEP TWO: Set Up Hosting
Being self-hosted is important if you want to earn money from your blog. Self-hosting gives you full control to add affiliate links, ads, and other monetization tools. It costs a little, but it’s affordable and worthwhile for a professional, earnable site.
When choosing a hosting plan, pick a trusted provider and a plan that fits your budget. Many hosts offer a low introductory price when paid upfront for a year or more. If possible, enable Domain Privacy Protection so your contact details aren’t publicly listed.
During signup you may be offered optional add-ons. Only choose extras you truly need. Domain privacy is a useful, inexpensive option to consider.

STEP THREE: Set Up Your Blog
After purchasing hosting, log in to your account and find the control panel (often labeled “cPanel”). Look for one-click installers or an option to install WordPress, which is the most common platform for blogs. Follow the prompts to install WordPress — most hosts guide you through the remaining steps.

Once WordPress is installed, you’ll want to choose a theme to give your blog a polished look. In the WordPress dashboard, go to “Appearance” and then “Themes” to browse free and paid options. Pick a clean, responsive theme that supports your content and layout goals.
