Table of Contents

I love the holidays. In our home we start playing Christmas music early and decorate soon after Thanksgiving. Cozy weekends often include a bowl of popcorn with truffle oil, homemade cookies, and a lineup of favorite holiday movies like Rudolph, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, and Elf.

But what really completes the season for me are the scents: warm gingerbread, a freshly cut tree, cinnamon, and clove. This simple essential oil room spray captures those cozy aromas. One mist can transform a room into a pine-scented, mulled-wine–like atmosphere—until the usual household distractions call you back to reality.

What you’ll need:

  • Fine-mist glass spray bottles: Choose amber or cobalt blue to protect oils from UV light and preserve scent. Glass is preferable to plastic for longevity.
  • Small funnel: Makes adding liquids tidy and easy.
  • Grain alcohol (Everclear, 190 proof / 95%): Alcohol helps dissolve essential oils and preserves the mixture. If you can’t source grain alcohol, high-proof vodka (151 proof / ~75%) is an alternative, though it may not solubilize oils as effectively.
  • Distilled water: Prevents contamination and extends shelf life compared with tap water. If you don’t have distilled water, boiled and cooled tap water can be used.
  • Essential oils (30–50 drops total): For the holiday blend use evergreen notes like Siberian fir, Douglas fir, or pine (Siberian fir is preferred), plus juniper berry, clove, wild orange (or tangerine), and an optional drop of cinnamon for warmth. Bottle strength and aroma vary by brand—smell oils before buying when possible.
  • Labels: Design your own or use printable templates. Weatherproof label stock is recommended if the spray may be used in humid environments like the shower.

How to use your homemade Christmas room spray

Shake well before each use. Spray upward into the center of the room and walk through the mist to distribute aroma evenly. For a longer-lasting scent, lightly mist pillows, throws, and bed linens.

Ways to use the spray:

  • Gift it: Packaged with a label, it makes a thoughtful stocking stuffer or hostess gift.
  • Air freshener: Keep a bottle in the bathroom or entryway for quick refreshes.
  • Tree refresher: Spritz a real or artificial tree to boost pine scent.
  • Shower mist: Spray a few pumps in the shower (away from direct water) for a spa-like aroma experience.
  • Linen spray: Mist sheets and pillowcases on special evenings for a cozy finish to the day.

DIY Essential Oil Holiday Room Spray

This simple holiday spray is made with essential oils, distilled water, and alcohol for a long-lasting, natural fragrance.

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Makes: 4 fl. ounces

Ingredients

  • 4-ounce fine-mist spray bottle
  • 2 ounces distilled water
  • 1.5 ounces Everclear (grain alcohol)
  • 50 drops Siberian fir, Douglas fir, or pine (Siberian fir recommended)
  • 20 drops juniper berry
  • 5 drops clove
  • 5 drops wild orange or tangerine
  • 1–2 drops cinnamon (optional)
  • Printable labels (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the bottle: Clean the spray bottle with distilled water and let it dry.
  2. Add essential oils: Combine the oils directly in the bottle. This recipe is intentionally bold so the scent lingers—reduce drops if you prefer something lighter.
  3. Add alcohol and water: Pour in the grain alcohol and swirl to dissolve the oils. Top off with distilled water. Shake thoroughly and adjust: add more oil for a stronger aroma or more water for a milder scent.
  4. Label and finish: Dry the bottle and affix your label. For best alignment, place the bottle on a flat surface and position the label parallel to the water line.

Notes

Labels

Choose weatherproof label materials if the bottle may be exposed to moisture. Printable label sheets are available in various sizes—follow the sheet manufacturer’s printing instructions for best results.

Essential oils and sensitivities

Essential oils are concentrated plant compounds. Although natural, they can cause sensitivity in people and pets. Do not use undiluted on skin, avoid internal use unless advised by a professional, and avoid certain oils during pregnancy or around infants without expert guidance. If any irritation occurs in people or pets, discontinue use immediately.
